In debt and don't
know how to get out of debt? Here are six tips to get you started.
Consolidate Your
Debt - There are still banks and credit unions who can provide personal loans to
consolidate your debt. If you have student loans or tax debt. Those can be
handled separately. If you have a lot of equity in a home you might be able to
consolidate your debt into a home equity loan. You would need to have more than
20% equity to qualify for a loan like that.
Try Debt
Negotiation or Debt Settlement - Working with a reputable debt negotiation or
debt settlement company might help you be able to lower payments and pay off
debt much faster. Just be careful that the debt company is reputable.
Budget your
expenses and Cut Back on Small Luxuries To Pay Down Debt - The reality is, not
many people create a budget in their everyday lives. But not having a budget
makes you prone to unplanned expenses and splurges. On the other hand, a written
budget helps you divide your salary effectively so that none of your important
bills are neglected or forgotten. Just cut all spending by doing without things
that you really don't need. You can use this cash to pay down debt.
Watch your
spending - Stop spending on things you really don't need, after all that's
probably how you got into debt in the first place. Set yourself a weekly budget
for all your outgoings including going out, travel expenses and paying off your
debt - and make sure you stick to it. Try selling your expensive SUV and getting
a more economical car with a reduced payment. Use the difference in payment to
get out of debt faster. Or, if you can sell your house, consider moving into a
smaller house or something more affordable.
Put a hold on
using your credit cards. Don't use your credit cards for dining out or for any
unplanned purchase. As long as you have the means to pay for it in cash, don't
use your credit card. Stop adding charges on any of your cards until you manage
to get off from all your credit card bills.
Don't use your
credit card for cash advances. There are credit cards that double as debit cards
but using these for cash advances will only put you into a worse debt situation.
Cash advances are not covered by the grace period so you're immediately charged
with interest the moment you withdrew the cash. If you need cash on emergency,
try borrowing from a family or a friend instead.
Work overtime or
get a part time job - You are working on a great cause that will make your life
better and remember this is temporary. Once you start working another job use
the extra money toward debt reduction. If you have a mate then get your
significant other involved with helping you to reduce your debt fast. Two heads
are better than one.
Getting Out of
Debt today will be more difficult than it has been in over a decade, but there
are still ways to do it. The biggest way to make a difference in the size of
your debt will be to use a combination of any of the tips listed above. Once you
are able to get your debt lower, you will free up more of your money to pay debt
down even faster, and so on.
